EML Platform

Defined as special lanes for small vehicles such as motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and trishaws, exclusive motorcycle lanes (EMLs) are common in a few cities, primarily in Asia. In these cities, EMLs have proven to dramatically reduce motorcycle/scooter accidents creating better driving environments for all road users.

Other studies have shown that urban areas can significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and reduce fuel consumption while saving a great deal of time lost to congestion by simply incorporating more motorcycles/scooters into the commuting vehicle mix.

It is this author’s premise that a network of EMLs that eliminate or significantly reduce the number of conflict points between motorcycles/scooters and automobiles will maximize use of these proven modes of transport, providing personal mobility, a more equitable transportation system, improved traffic flow, reduced CO2 emissions and dependency on foreign oil, and creating a more dynamic and vibrant streetscape - a true "complete street".
